Merle and Thekla Schultz - Swing
Merle and Thekla Schultz founded Summit Swing to expand the joy of swing dancing to Summit County Colorado. With over 25 years combined experience in dance, Summit Swing organizes fundraisers, offers dance instruction classes, and helps bring dance back to the local schools.
Back in the 1950’s Merle was first taught to dance when he was 7 years old by his mother because she needed a dance partner. He didn’t swing dance much in high school and college. His interest was revived when he began dancing with his wife, Thekla, in the late 1990’s.
Thekla has 10 years experience in jazz dance as a young adult. Merle inspired an interest for her in swing dance and music from the 1930’s and 1940’s.
Merle and Thekla have taught swing classes at Colorado Mountain College in the past and currently teach at Summit High School, trying to pass on their love of dance and the music to young folks. Thekla has coached for Dancing with the Mountain Stars. They also organized and sponsored weekly dances over the summer at the Lake Dillon Amphitheatre. All proceeds from the dances benefited local non-profit organizations
